Audience segmentation is dividing a market or customer base into groups with shared traits or behaviors — so message, offer, and budget can differ where the groups genuinely differ.
Definition
Segments can be demographic, behavioral, value-based (LTV tiers), or lifecycle-based (prospect, new customer, lapsed). In modern paid media, segmentation's center of gravity moved from delivery (which the platform AI handles) to strategy: differentiated creative and offers per segment, exclusion logic, and measurement splits. Segmenting delivery for its own sake mostly fragments learning data.
Why it matters
The useful question is no longer 'how finely can we slice targeting' but 'where do segments deserve different treatment.' A lapsed high-LTV customer and a cold prospect should see different messages — that's segmentation earning its keep. Fifty micro-audiences with the same ad is segmentation as busywork.
In agentic execution
Adlyse's agents execute segment-level treatment — exclusions, budget splits, creative assignment — where the account's data shows segments actually behave differently, with humans approving the structure.
