Generative AI produces content — text, images, ad variations — when prompted. Agentic AI takes actions: it perceives conditions, decides what should change, and executes the change. In paid media, one writes the ad; the other runs the account.
Definition
The two are complements, not competitors, and most real systems use both: generative models draft creative and summarize performance, while the agentic layer decides which campaign gets more budget and executes the shift. The confusion comes from vendors labeling generative features 'agents.' The test: does the system act on the world (an ad account) or only produce artifacts for a human to use?
Why it matters
Buying 'AI' without this distinction is how teams end up with a content tool when they needed an execution layer, or vice versa. Generative AI compresses production time; agentic AI compresses the decision-to-action gap. They solve different bottlenecks.
In agentic execution
Adlyse is agentic first: its agents execute optimizations across ad platforms with human approval. Generative capabilities serve the execution loop, not the other way around.
