Smart Bidding is Google's set of auction-time bidding strategies — Target CPA, Target ROAS, Maximize Conversions, Maximize Conversion Value — where machine learning sets each bid using signals no human could process per-auction.
Definition
At auction time, Google's models evaluate contextual signals (device, location, time, audience membership, query intent, and many more) and set a bid predicted to hit your efficiency target. The advertiser's job becomes choosing the right strategy and target, feeding accurate conversion values, and giving the system enough conversion volume to learn. Manual CPC survives mostly in edge cases where signal is too thin for the models.
Why it matters
Bid management was once the core skill of paid search; Smart Bidding absorbed it. The leverage now sits in what you optimize toward — the choice of conversion events and values determines what the machine chases. A perfect bidder pointed at the wrong goal is a fast way to spend badly.
In agentic execution
Adlyse's agents don't out-bid Google inside Google's auction — they execute the layer above: which strategy and target each campaign should run, when targets should move, and how conversion value rules should change, with human approval on each change.
